What is “Yaoi”?

So what is this thing called yaoi, you may ask. Basically, yaoi is a genre of Japanese novels, manga, and anime which is also sometimes referred to as Boys Love, BL, or shounen-ai. Filled with a rich history within Japanese literature, art, and actual events (a separate post will be dedicated to the origins of yaoi), yaoi is basically: stories about homosexual men, which in modern day Japan are mainly written by heterosexual women for heterosexual women. In order to more easily navigate your way through this blog, this first post will be somewhat of a ‘glossary’ for the world of yaoi, explaining the terms which will be thrown around.
